Derivan Gesso is a great primer for canvas, board or even paper.
The strong white ground gives an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation.
Being a water-based product, Derivan Gesso can be thinned down with water if desired.
If working on canvas, Derivan Gesso will tighten the canvas when dry giving a taut ground on which to paint.
Derivan Gesso can be used to paint over old acrylic works to give the artist a like new surface to paint on.
If more than one coat is desired, then it is advisable to sand lightly between coats to obtain a smooth finish. Available in 500ml or 1 Litre tub.
National Art Materials (NAM) Gesso Primer
This gesso is an excellent non-toxic primer for sealing canvas, cardboard, paper wood, plaster and concrete. Canvas Gesso can be applied directly to raw stretched canvas.
The canvas may be made more taught by dampening with water. pre-sizing is not required with Gesso.
Wood and Cardboard Wood and Cardboard surfaces should be cleaned, dry and sanded before Gesso is applied. Plaster and Concrete Plaster and Concrete should be clean and dry before Gesso is applied. Use a paint roller or flat brush.
Available in 1, 4 and 10 Litre tubs.
Global Colours Gesso Medium is recommended for surface preparation and sealing. It is flexible, fast drying and permanent.
Gesso Medium is best applied with a broad brush or cardboard wedge, onto a surface free from dust and grease. Dilute with 25% water to allow for absorption into surfaces of varying porosity (e.g. concrete, wood, canvas, plaster, etc.).
To achieve a smooth surface apply several thin coats with a light sanding between each coat. To prepare for oil painting, apply a minimum of 3 coats of Gesso. Allow 1-2 hours between coats, depending on the weather conditions and temperature.

Matisse Clear Sealer MM12 250ml
Specially formulated for folk art techniques.
MM12 Clear Sealer can be used on raw wood if you are not using a Matisse Background Colour (which has a built-in sealer) and want to paint a design on the raw wood leaving the natural grain revealed.
It can also be used on glass, ceramics, terracotta pots and new metal.
All surfaces should be clean and dust-free before MM12 Clear Sealer application.
For porous surfaces such as wood, terracotta pots, unfired ceramics, etc. apply diluted with up to 1 part water to 2 parts MM12 Clear Sealer.
You can also stain and seal wood.
MM25 Matisse Black Gesso 500ml

An intense black ground with an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation. Matisse MM25 Black Gesso is a water-based product and can be thinned down with water.
Use equal parts of water to MM25 Black Gesso when working on raw canvas/linen.
If working on canvas, MM25 Black Gesso will tighten the canvas, making a firmer ground to paint on.
MM26 Transparent Gesso (Pastel Primer)Artist Quality - 250ml
MM26 Transparent Gesso is similar to MM10 Gesso and MM25 Black Gesso only without pigmentation; therefore, giving a transparent (although not altogether clear) flexible primer for canvas, board or even paper with an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation.
If working on canvas, Matisse MM26 Transparent Gesso will tighten the canvas, making a firmer ground to paint on.
MM27 Low Viscosity Gesso - 500mlArtist Quality
Matisse MM27 Low Viscosity Gesso has been specially formulated for those artists who prefer a lower viscosity gesso. It has all the outstanding properties of the original MM10 Matisse Gesso formula including bright white colour, soft tooth and flat finish however, MM27 has a softer, creamier texture making it easier to brush out and manipulate with a knife.
We recommend always applying 2 coats of gesso (more if necessary) to your substrate for maximum adhesion and protection of the surface painting.
