Akua Waterbased Intaglio Inks are easy to use water soluble etching inks, in a range of beautiful dense colours. Very buttery and easy to wipe.
Can be left uncovered in the jar without hardening or forming a skin.
Prints well on dry or dampened papers.
Although water-based the inks are not water-soluble, and cannot be reactivated by water even while the prints are wet, as they contain no dryers the ink drying time will be similiar to oil based inks.
When cleaning up use a dry rag on all surfaces.
Clean any remaining residue with warm soapy water and a rag.
Solar plates are cleaned with vegetable oil.

Bitumous paint is an acid resistant material that is applied to the plate to prevent acids from ‘biting’ the plate. Bitumous paint tends to be thicker and can flake off - recommended for protecting the back of uncoated plates.

For anyone who wants solvent-free cleaning, this unique range of etching inks can be washed away with liquid soap and water. Suitable for all types of intaglio printing e.g. etching, aquatint and line engraving.
This range does not contain any driers. For faster drying rates, add a small amount of cobalt or manganese driers.
Caligo always select light fast pigments for our formulations. All their inks are rated 6 or higher on the International Blue Wool Scale.
Plastic plates may be used instead of metal plates for many dry point techniques.
Clear plastic allows quick transferral of image from design to plate by tracing.
Deluxe plastic plates are made from a higher grade plastic with both sides protected by removable thin polythene cover sheets to guarantee a perfect scratch-free surface.

Ferric chloride is necessary for the etching of plates for printing fine art images in intaglio (printmaking), a printmaking technique with an incised image. Ferric Chloride is recommended for school use. Acids must be handled sensibly. Use protective gloves and glasses.

Five black inks and Graphite were formulated to meet the demands of printmakers who want deep rich black inks with good working characteristics. Portland Black and Portland Cool Black are ideal for edition printing; both offer a strong line and medium plate tone. For engravers, printers of mezzotints, or others who need more resistance from their ink, Portland Stiff Black is also available.
For plastic etching plates use Portland black with a drop of tack reducer for easy wiping (tip: use old telephone book pages for wiping)

Hansa Yellow Light: Is a cool yellow. Cleaner in masstone, brighter in tint and more transparent than a Cad Yellow Light. Excellent for mixing intense oranges and greens.
Depending on the printmaking technique, the inks may need to be adjusted slightly with one of Gamblin’s modifiers in order to print perfectly. Temperature and humidity, the type of plate, and type of paper all affect how inks perform.
